December 2016

Posted on January 6, 2017 at 5:34 PM by Bill Armstrong

I hope everyone had a safe 2016 and I hope you have a great 2017!  We have been busy throughout the year here at the Sheriff’s office so I provided you with a few of our stats as of December 30, 2016.  Over the last twelve months we’ve had:

  • 11,878 calls for service
  • 174 criminal arrests of which 77 were felony charges and 89 drug related charges
  • 457 car accidents of which 266 were car/deer accidents
  • 1,169 Civil papers served
  • 40 gun permits to purchase
  • 681 gun permits to carry
  • 2,256 traffic stops issuing 500 Citations and 1,415 warnings
  • Our dispatcher/jailers fielded 3,416 Emergency 911 calls
  • 15 incidents in the jail
  • Our average daily jail population for this year was 10 inmates/day

Here are our goals for next year;
We plan on continuing to work on our “High 5 Project” with the Iowa State Patrol.  You will notice we are more visible on the roadways and we will be checking to make sure everyone is wearing their seatbelts in an effort to prevent serious injury or death in the case of a car accident.

We plan on continuing our diligent work on the narcotics and illegal drug activity in this area. Once again your tips or help are greatly appreciated and needed to combat the drug problems in this area.  Please feel free to call our TIP line (563)245-1234 with any info.

The Riverview Center out of Dubuque in conjunction with area law enforcement agencies have started a “SART” team (Sexual Abuse Response Team) to provide better resources, victim services and thorough investigations into sexual assaults.  This collective cooperation is working great in providing aid to the victims and we will continue to assist in this.

We plan to work diligently and cooperatively with area law enforcement agencies to gather intelligence to help aid us in solving theft cases, burglaries, drug info, and any possible threats to our community.

We will be available for traffic control and safety for car cruises, tractor parades, motorcycle rides, city events, county fair, river patrol, and assisting the public where needed.

I plan on providing proper training to all our employees so they can perform better at their jobs and provide citizens with the best service available to us.  We also plan to do what we can to deter crime and as the County Attorney would say, provide “Justice for all” of our victims of crimes.

“Our mission at the sheriff’s office has been to enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Clayton County by professionally working in partnership to provide safety, security and service to the community while upholding the constitutional responsibilities of the Office of Sheriff.”

And if you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact me anytime, e-mail me at, or stop by to see me.

Thanks and be safe,

Sheriff Mike Tschirgi
