On September 17, 2017 at 2:46am, Clayton County Deputies were dispatched to 19745 Keystone Road for a burglary in progress. The reporting party identified the suspect and further advised that an assault was taking place. When Deputies arrived they found a male subject with severe injuries from an assault. The MarMac Ambulance was dispatched to the scene and the victim was transported to Crossing River’s Hospital for treatment of injuries. During the investigation, Deputies learned that the suspect forcefully entered the residence and assaulted a male victim and a female victim. The suspect fled of foot prior to law enforcement arriving on scene. Deputies charged 33 year old Christopher Junk of Monona with Burglary 1st Degree a Class “B” Felony, Willfull Injury a Class “C” Felony, Harassment- 1st Degree, Domestic Abuse Assault, and violation of a no contact order. A warrant for Junk was issued and he was arrested after turning himself into law enforcement on September 28th. Junk remains in the Clayton County Jail without bond. If convicted, Junk could face up to 37 years in prison. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Iowa State Patrol, Guttenberg Police Department, and MarMac Police and EMS.
On September 23, 2017 at 1:37am, Clayton County Deputies conducted a traffic stop on Highway 52 near Millville for a traffic violation. Deputies came into contact with 23 year old Chance Turner of Guttenberg, 21 year old Lexus McCullick of Garnavillo and 37 year old Matthew Mitchell of Guttenberg. Deputies detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Upon further investigation, Deputies obtained a search warrant where they located several containers and packages of marijuana inside the vehicle as well as items used for the packaging, sale and distribution of illegal narcotics. Deputies charged Turner, Mitchell and McCullick charged with Possession of Marijuana with the intent to deliver, a Class” D” Felony . Turner and McCullick remain in the Clayton County Jail on a $5,000 cash bond. Mitchell was released from jail after posting bond.
On September 23, 2017 at 10:17pm, Clayton County Deputies were dispatched to a one vehicle accident on Glacier Road. Upon further investigation, it was determined that Austin Kuehl of Earlville was operating a 2001 Chevrolet 2500 when he lost control. The vehicle entered the ditch and overturned causing $5,000 damage.
On September 24, 2017 at 8:36pm, Clayton County Deputies were dispatched to a combine rollover on Pleasant Ridge Road near Golden Ave. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the driver, 61 year old David Schmelzer of Postville was operating a 1966 John Deere Combine when his tires went off of the shoulder of the roadway causing the combine to overturn causing $30,000 damage. Schmelzer was evaluated at the scene for minor injuries. During the investigation, Deputies observed signs of impairment. Subsequently Schmelzer was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated and transported to the Clayton County Jail pending an appearance in Magistrate Court. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Monona Police Department and Monona Ambulance.
On September 28, 2017 at 6:54pm, Clayton County Deputies attempted to serve an arrest warrant at 10688 Aspen Ave near Postville. 54 year old Keith Taylor of Postville attempted to flee on foot from law enforcement. Deputies deployed a Taser and subdued Taylor where he was taken into custody. Taylor was charged with Interference with official acts and also held on Warrants from Fayette and Buchanan County. Deputies also arrested 38 year old Shannon Thompson of Elgin for Accessory to a felony for aiding and concealing Taylor. Both were transported to the Clayton County Jail pending an appearance in Magistrate Court.
On September 30, 2017 at 12:50am, Clayton County Deputies were dispatched to a one vehicle accident on Kimberly Ave near McGregor. Upon further investigation, it was determined that Chloe Diehl of Marquette was operating a 2008 Chevrolet Impala when she failed to negotiate a curve and lost control. Her vehicle entered the ditch and overturned causing $8,000 damage. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by MarMac Police and Fire Department and Tri-State Ambulance.
On October 3, 2017 at 11:55pm, Clayton County Deputies arrested 44 year old Michael Werges for driving while suspended. Werges was arrested after he was observed driving a motor vehicle to the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office. Werges was held pending an initial appearance in court.
