On October 8, 2017 at 1:50pm, Clayton County Deputies were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Highway 13/52 near Highway 18. Upon further investigation, it was determined that Kenneth Brown of Cedar Rapids was operating a 2016 Mazda CX5 Southbound on Highway 13/52 when he attempted to pass a 2002 Chevrolet 2500 operated by Samuel Koch of Coggon. An oncoming Northbound 2011 Harley Davidson Motorcycle operated by Dawn Hicks of Waverly and a 2014 Harley Davidson operated by Timothy Smith of Waverly took evasive action to avoid hitting Brown. Hicks’ motorcycle struck Smith’s motorcycle causing him to lose control and strike Koch’s vehicle. Hicks was transported to the Central Community Hospital by Monona Ambulance for treatment of injuries. Brown was charged with unsafe passing. Deputies also investigated a second accident which occurred after the first accident. A 2007 Saturn Outlook operated by Gary Hamor of Oelwein was traveling Northbound when he slowed down due to the first accident. His vehicle was rear ended by a 2003 Subaru Outback operated by Jonathan Romo of Aplington. Two passengers in Hamor’s vehicle were transported to Central Community Hospital by the Monona Ambulance for treatment of injuries. Romo was charged with Failure to maintain control. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Monona Ambulance, the Monona Fire Department and the Iowa State Patrol.
