Press Release 12/22/17

The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office was selected as a recipient of the High Five Rural Traffic Safety Program. From October 2016 through October 2017, the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office goals of the project were high visibility enforcement and public education to reduce traffic crashed by changing driver’s behavior.

The Sheriff’s Office was awarded $10,000 in overtime funding for this project from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau. At the beginning of the project, the average seat belt usage was approximately 85% in Clayton County. As part of the project we focused on enforcement of rural roadways by providing high visibility enforcement with the Iowa State Patrol. The Sheriff’s Office focused on speeding and seat belt enforcement as they are two major factors in injuries and deaths involving traffic crashes. Toward the end of the project the average seat belt usage in Clayton County was 92%. According to Sheriff Michael Tschirgi, “Clayton County also saw a reduction in traffic crashes in Clayton County this past year which can be contributed to our efforts of enforcement and education involving this project which we were very honored to be chosen to participate in. When we can collect data and see we have made a difference with increased seat belt usage and less traffic accidents we know we have obtained our goal through this project.”
